Phosphorescent hourglass selenite from Alberta is especially captivating because the hourglass pattern isn’t visible under normal light at all. The crystals appear completely clear and uniform, but when exposed to UV light, a sharp, well-defined hourglass shape suddenly emerges from within the otherwise transparent gypsum. This hidden structure is created by subtle variations in impurities or lattice defects that don’t affect the crystal’s appearance in daylight but fluoresce strongly under ultraviolet illumination. The result is a striking “reveal” effect- an invisible internal geometry brought to life only through UV, which lingering as a phosphorescent afterglow once the light source is removed.
