Lazurite on calcite from Afghanistan typically forms as rich blue lazurite crystals embedded in a matrix of creamy white calcite, creating a striking color contrast. Small crystals of metallic pyrite are peppered throughout the calcite, which catch the eye as they glimmer. Lazurite is the main mineral that contributes to lapis lazuli’s iconic deep-blue hue. Specimens from Afghanistan, especially the Sar-e-Sang mines in Badakhshan Province, are renowned for their high color saturation, well-formed crystals, and aesthetic formations.
