Translucent almandine garnets occur within a graphite-rich schist matrix alongside slender black tourmaline crystals in this metamorphic assemblage from Massachusetts. The garnets are iron–aluminium silicates formed during regional metamorphism of pelitic sediments, growing as porphyroblasts within a strongly foliated schistose fabric that also concentrates carbon as graphite.
A characteristic feature of this material is its optical response under strong backlighting, where the garnets transmit deep red light and show a subtle internal “ember-like” glow due to their semi-translucent nature.
