Cobaltoan calcite, also known as cobalto calcite, is a pink to deep magenta variety of calcite colored by the substitution of cobalt ions in the calcite crystal structure. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is known for producing brilliantly colored, and lustrous crystals that are prized by collectors. This specimen also features black heterogenite, a secondary cobalt mineral, typically forming through the weathering of primary cobalt ore.
