Sapphires displaying a golden sheen, known in the trade as "gold sheen" or "Zawadi" sapphires, entered the gem market in late 2009. These sapphires are mined in eastern Kenya, however the exact locality of this specimen is unconfirmed as it came from an old collection without a label. Zawadi sapphires contain dense needles and platelets of hematite/ilmenite inclusions, which are responsible for producing a golden shimmer on the surface. This sapphire is an exceptional piece, with shades of green and greenish yellow throughout, and lustrous surfaces that highlight natural etching. The center of the crystal is golden brown, and has a metallic shimmer when turned. What is remarkable about this specimen is not only the impressive size, but the terminated faces that feature geometric etching.
