Hanksite is a remarkable evaporite mineral discovered in Searles Lake, San Bernardino County, California. It forms in saline lake basin evaporite deposits, often in association with other salts. Physically, hanksite is soft, yellow (with gray/green clay inclusions), with a vitreous to dull luster. It is soluble in water and displays a pale-yellow fluorescence under longwave UV, as well as weak phosphorescence.
