Pyrite, also known as iron sulfide, is a common and widespread mineral found in a variety of geological environments, including hydrothermal veins, sedimentary rocks, and metamorphic formations. Pyrite is often called fool’s gold because its brassy-yellow color and metallic luster closely resemble gold, frequently deceiving inexperienced prospectors. This mix-up earned pyrite its nickname, but today it’s valued as a collectible mineral in its own right.
