Witherite from the Cave-in-Rock district of Hardin County, Illinois often occurs in striking combination with calcite, producing specimens highly valued by collectors. Crystals of witherite typically display a pseudo-hexagonal orthorhombic habit, sometimes doubly-terminated, with soft yellow or creamy tones, often translucent with waxy or silky luster. Under longwave UV light, witherite shows strong fluorescence, while the calcite provides contrast in color, texture, and form.
