Atacamite from Chile is a vibrant green copper chloride hydroxide mineral that forms in arid, oxidized zones of copper deposits. It was first described in the Atacama Desert, one of the driest regions on Earth, where unique climatic conditions promote the formation of secondary copper minerals. Atacamite typically occurs as prismatic or acicular crystals, often in radiating clusters or crusts. It is associated with minerals such as chrysocolla, brochantite, and malachite. Due to its intense green color and rarity in well-formed crystals, atacamite from Chile is highly valued by collectors and serves as a classic example of supergene copper mineralization in hyper-arid environments.
