Gitter Quartz, also known as Lattice Quartz, is a distinctive quartz formation primarily found in Namibia’s Erongo Region, notably within the Erongo Mountains and the nearby Klein Spitzkoppe area. The term “Gitter” is derived from the German word for “lattice” or “fence,” aptly describing the mineral’s unique structure.
This formation occurs when quartz crystals grow in an interlocking, lattice-like pattern, often as epitactic intergrowths with feldspar. In some instances, the quartz completely replaces the feldspar, resulting in pseudomorphs where the original feldspar’s shape is retained but is now composed entirely of quartz. These specimens are often coated in radial sprays of acicular foitite, and structural crystals of pale orange feldspar, creating an extremely uncommon and unusual combination.
