This striking contrast forms when stichtite develops as a secondary mineral during the alteration of ultramafic rocks, infilling fractures and masses within the host serpentine. The vivid purple coloration is caused by trace chromium, while the surrounding serpentine reflects the magnesium-rich nature of the original rock. Typically occurring in massive or mottled patterns rather than well-defined crystals, atlantisite is highly valued for its unique color interplay and ornamental appeal.
