Black tourmaline, or schorl, is one of the signature minerals of Namibia’s Erongo Mountains, a world-class locality renowned for exceptionally lustrous, well-formed black tourmaline crystals. Schorl commonly occurs in association with quartz in the region, including striking specimens where sharp, prismatic black crystals are perched directly on contrasting smoky quartz. The deep black color and high luster of the schorl create a dramatic contrast with the translucent to smoky-brown quartz, making this combination particularly sought after by collectors. These minerals formed in the granitic pegmatites of the Erongo region, which are also famous for producing exceptional beryl, feldspar, fluorite, and other classic pegmatite minerals.
