This emerald-like material from Mutoko, Zimbabwe was originally thought to be emeralds in mica matrix, but testing has shown it is not beryl-based and therefore not true emerald. Instead, it has been identified as a chromium-rich variety of mica, now referred to as “emerald mica” (chrome muscovite). The material shows striking green coloration and occurs as irregular, anhedral patches and streaks within foliated mica, creating strong contrast between the green zones and shimmering host rock. While it does not meet the definition of emerald, it remains a visually distinctive and uncommon mineral occurrence with limited known supply from the region.
