Iolite is a striking violet-blue gemstone known for its strong pleochroism, which is the ability to show different colors (typically blue, violet, and gray-yellow) when viewed from different angles. This effect however, is primarily apparent in specimens with transparency. Composed of magnesium iron aluminum silicate, it rates 7–7.5 on the Mohs scale, making it durable enough for most jewelry. It is often used as an affordable alternative to sapphire due to its similar appearance.
