Malachite pseudomorphs after cuprite from the historic Chessy copper mines of France are among the world’s most iconic mineral transformations. Originally formed as sharp octahedral cuprite crystals, they were gradually replaced by vibrant green malachite while preserving their original crystal shape, a process known as pseudomorphism. The result is striking specimens that perfectly capture the geometry of the original cuprite, often displaying crisp octahedral or dodecahedral forms with rich velvety to lustrous green surfaces. Chessy is also famous as the type locality for azurite, making these classic pseudomorphs especially significant to both mineral collectors and the history of mineralogy.
