Smithsonite from the famed Kelly Mine in New Mexico is especially prized for its striking blue coloration, silky luster, and smooth botryoidal formations. Formed through the oxidation of zinc-rich lead deposits within the Magdalena mining district, Kelly Mine smithsonite developed in cavities and fractures of the surrounding limestone host rock, producing some of the world’s most recognizable blue smithsonite specimens. The vivid turquoise to sky-blue hues are caused by trace amounts of copper within the mineral structure, while the rounded, polished-looking surfaces give the material its distinctive appearance. With its relatively low hardness and high zinc content, smithsonite is both an important zinc carbonate mineral and a highly collectible species admired for its unusual color and elegant form.
