Pale blue smithsonite from the Democratic Republic of Congo is a delicate and highly collectible variety of zinc carbonate, valued for its soft, tranquil coloration and smooth, polished finish. The gentle blue tones are typically caused by trace amounts of copper within the mineral, giving the stone its cool, almost watery appearance. Unlike well-formed crystals, smithsonite most commonly develops in rounded, botryoidal masses with a naturally silky or pearly luster, which translates beautifully when shaped into polished double-terminated towers.
