Purple stichtite is a rare chromium-bearing carbonate mineral best known from deposits in South Africa, where it commonly occurs intergrown with green serpentine. This striking color contrast forms when stichtite develops as a secondary mineral during the alteration of ultramafic rocks. The vivid purple hues are caused by trace chromium, while the surrounding serpentine reflects the host rock’s magnesium-rich composition. Often found in massive or fibrous aggregates rather than distinct crystals, South African stichtite is prized for its dramatic natural coloration.
