Watermelon tourmaline from the Paprok region of Nuristan Province is renowned for its striking natural color zoning, displaying combinations of pink and green within a single crystal. While many specimens exhibit the classic watermelon pattern of a pink core surrounded by a green outer rim, others display these colors as distinct growth layers or bands, creating equally dramatic visual effects. Occurring within complex granitic pegmatites of the Hindu Kush Mountains, these elbaite tourmalines formed during the final stages of pegmatite crystallization and are commonly associated with quartz, feldspar, cleavelandite, and lepidolite. The Paprok deposits are celebrated among mineral collectors for producing exceptionally well-formed crystals with vivid color contrasts, excellent transparency, and sharp prism faces. Many specimens exhibit dramatic bicolored or multicolored growth patterns, making Paprok watermelon tourmalines some of the most sought-after and aesthetically distinctive tourmaline specimens from Afghanistan.
