Weloganite | crystal cluster, rare mineral specimen from Canada

Weloganite from Quebec is an exceptionally rare strontium zirconium carbonate best known from the famed Francon Quarry on Montreal Island, the type locality where the mineral was first discovered in 1966. It typically forms distinctive deeply striated, pseudo-hexagonal crystals and stacked plate-like aggregates, with colors ranging from colorless and pale white to yellow, green, and occasionally grey. The crystals can display a lustrous, translucent to transparent appearance and are notable for their unusual morphology. Quebec weloganite formed within cavities of alkaline, dawsonite-rich igneous sills that intrude Ordovician limestone, where it occurs alongside minerals such as quartz, calcite, dawsonite, strontianite, and albite. The Francon Quarry is particularly significant as the type locality for weloganite and several other rare mineral species, making it one of Canada’s most important mineralogical localities.
